Todoroki Falls (轟の滝) is one of three falls in Tokushima that are included in Japan’s ‘Top 100 Waterfalls’. The kanji Chinese character for todoroki means ‘roar,  thunder or boom resound. If you’re adventurous enough to venture through the chasm into the cavern where the cascade is, the boom resound will become apparent.
On the day we went, there was heavy rainfall, and just getting close was difficult. See our video below at the end of this article.
In the middle of the waterfall’s mouth an enormous stone splits the stream in two, and as there are cliffs on both sides, true to the name of the waterfall, its roaring sound echoes loudly throughout the surroundings.
Although it’s ‘fame’ is derived from it’s main fall, there are plenty of other cascades and sights to see besides the main attraction. The falls are collectively known as Todoroki’s Ninety-nine Falls (轟九十九滝 ).

From the parking area past the main fall to the top fall, Nabewari Fall (鍋割りの滝) is about a 3km round-trip. There is also a shrine and a temple by the main fall.
Most people who visit Todoroki Falls usually leave after visiting Todoroki Shrine and the main waterfall.
However, upstream there are numerous waterfalls of varying sizes.
The whole mountain is almost like a waterfall gallery.
Todoroki Shrine
The trail begins near Todoroki Shrine (轟神社) which sits atop a tree-lined stone stairway.
A little way above the main waterfall begins a series of smaller waterfalls which feed it.
